Managing Change for Sustainability Success

One often unmentioned aspect of implementing sustainable business practices is managing change. When sustainability is seen as a strategic direction, then the entire organization must play a part. The actualizing of it provides both fun and excitement, but it also can lead the company into unexpected areas creating new pressures. As an organization grapples with the internal changes there are also external changes (such as a search for new vendors, client communication, etc.) that undo old practices and relationships. Because of the large number of potential changes and impacts, an effective implementation of a well developed environmental plan goes way beyond the scope of any one manger and will tap the resources that have been previously undeveloped. Like any other system-wide change, leadership and communication become key. What makes this approach to change different is the wonderful and inspiring stories that bubble up as employees generate creative approaches to solve problems.
